NRSC RESPONSE TO OCTOBER UNEMPLOYMENT REPORT

WASHINGTON - National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) Communications Director Brian Walsh issued the following statement in response to the Labor Department’s announcement today that the nation’s unemployment rate climbed to 10.2 percent in October, topping the 10 percent mark for the first time in 26 years.

"For the first time in more than two decades America’s unemployment has reached 10.2 percent, with 190,000 jobs lost in October alone. This devastating announcement came despite assurances from the Obama Administration and Congressional Democrats in February that their massive $787 billion ‘stimulus’ bill would prevent unemployment rates from surpassing 8 percent.

"Clearly the Democrats’ stimulus strategy has failed, and now they are asking families, seniors, and job creators to trust them to pass yet another trillion dollar spending bill to take over America’s health care system. This strategy is doomed from the start and will lead to more job loss and higher health costs for Americans already struggling to find work.

"Instead of ramming another massive spending bill through Congress, the President should encourage Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to work with Republicans to come up with a real bipartisan health care solution that will lower costs for Americans instead of putting government bureaucrats between patients and their doctors nationwide."

"In November 2010, voters across America will have an opportunity to hold the Democrats accountable for their disastrous economic plans and misuse of taxpayer dollars."
